Hansie's Experience with a regular Soundblaster 16

Simple Fact is that NT4.0 gets very confused if you are not at the standard 220 / 5 / 1 Settings that have become the Soundblaster default - I simply told NT4 where the card was and violla - make sure you have the NT4.0 CD handy just in case it wants drivers and shit..

Soundblaster PnP woes

Subject: The Final: Soundblaster 16 PNP V.E. and NT4

Hello my honored friends and colleagues,

After the trouble with the SB16PnP V.E. mentioned in my previous mail I tried installing it again , but first in Win95. That installation went fairly ok, due to not having an IDE CD ROM. After this success I was convinced that the problem could not be a hardware conflict, so I rebooted NT and tried again. This time the PNP-ISA-thingie didn't even auto detect it at startup. Calling Creative labs was as useful as watching paint dry. So I decided to give it a last try on my own. I fired up Regedit and deleted all the stuff related to PNP-ISA and SB16 that I could find. After a reboot, the PNP ISA once again found the card. This time I did not accept the values it suggested, but entered values i wrote down from the settings I used in '95. This brought (after an other reboot of course) the card to live. Only that it could neither play mid nor rmi files. After 90 minutes of messing around with the various tabs in Control/panel/multimedia/MIDI and Devices, I finally got the thing to work. And it now operates to my full satisfaction. BTW. The support I 'received' from Creative Labs Europe wasn't worth calling at all. They promised faxing me a troubleshooting FAQ for installing Plug'n'Play cards under NT, but this never arrived here. Phone support is not available for a minority like us (that uses the only REAL OS). Only for ppl using Micro$ofts Operating System for Kids and mentally insane (Win95). I wonder why they were elected for best customer support in 1995 here in Germany.

Greetings

ESS soundcards are eveil vile things but every man and his dog uses them - the Compaq Presario series and most notebooks including Toshiba ... the answer lies in its compatibility with the generic Soundblaster (mono)

Where can I find NT 4.0 drivers for ESS AudioDrive for my Toshiba 405cs note book?

Use the SoundBlaster driver, as it is compatible.

NT 4 will not detect modem on COM3!

I have a modem installed on my NT 4.0 Server either on COM3 or COM4 (I don't know which) but when the routine tries to detect it, it only scans COM1 and COM2, any suggestions?

NT (4.0 included - ed.) does not do com-port sharing. Each com port must have a dedicated IRQ. Com 3 by default shares IRQ 4 w/ com1, so NT dosn't see it. Try putting your COM3 device on IRQ 5, an NT will see it.
